Spend Quality Time as a Big Brother, or Sister
Posted on 11/08/2010
We know free time is precious these days, but is there a better way to spend it than helping children reach their full potential? If this question got you thinking, then you may want to consider becoming a mentor for Big Brothers Big Sisters.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of America has been active since 1904. Started by Ernest Coulter in New York City, this organization aims to build one-to-one relationships with mentors and today’s youth.
Volunteering your time is pretty easy. The organization is in all 50 states as well as a total of 12 countries around the world. Head to www.bbbs.org and fill out an online application.
Once you’re a Big, you and your Little will decide on a regular schedule for outings. These can range from reading a book together, playing a board game or going to a sporting event.
You’ll get support from a Big Brothers Big Sisters Match Support Specialist to give you feedback, provide guidance and offer advice on how to handle situations that are beyond your abilities.
You will make a difference. Big Brothers Big Sisters claims that those children enrolled will be 52 percent less likely to skip school and 46 percent less likely to begin using drugs. Now that’s something that helps our entire community.
