Change Your Tune and Listen to Singer/Songwriters
Posted on 06/13/2011
When mainstream music is ruled by over-produced dance ballads and cookie cutter pop stars, sometimes it is nice to take a step back and open your ears to a new world of music. This world is the world of singer/songwriters where creativity is encouraged and being original is rewarded with loyal fans and inspired followers.
With the originality and creativity that singer/songwriters explore, you’re going to find some music that may take a couple listens to appreciate. But there’s a good chance the tunes will end up growing on you because you can appreciate what they are trying to accomplish with their experimentation.
Genres play a part in how far the singer/songwriters want to take you on their musical journey. Singer/songwriters typically show more versatility by changing genres from album to album. For example, singer/songwriter and front man for hardcore band Alexisonfire, Dallas Green performs as City and Colour. Green displays an evolution of sound over his past albums. In his album “Sometimes,” Green explores a more acoustic and emotional tone to his songs. Whereas, in his follow up album, “Bring Me Your Love” he takes a turn for a folk style. In Green’s latest album, he experiments with a full band and puts a refreshing spin on a folk/country style of music.
Subject matter of the lyrics is also something you will notice if you decide to partake on this unique adventure. What the artists sing about can range from personal experiences to what’s happening in the world. Come in with an open mind. Even though you might not dig what the artists are singing about, you can respect that they are making music that is theirs; and they want to share their musical journey with you.
