Go on a Real Life Treasure Hunt
Posted on 11/07/2011
While you may not have been born in the swashbuckling days filled with pirate ship adventures, that doesn’t mean you can’t go on an adventure of your own. Geocaching, a 21st century treasure hunting craze, allows you to use a GPS to find coordinates where a geocache, or container, is hidden. Find the geocache, sign your name, put it back and share your story. Follow these steps to make your treasure hunting dreams a reality.
Go online to www.geocaching.com to sign up for the worldwide game. The best part about the treasure hunt is that you can be a member of the game for free. If you decide you love geocaching, you can always sign up later for more features by paying a fee. All the site asks for to obtain free membership is your email address and name.
Search the Site
Once you have membership, search the site to find locations near you. There is a feature so that you can type in your zip code and find a location nearby. The geocaches are located all around the world, so you shouldn’t have a problem finding something in a close radius.
Grab the GPS and Set Sail
Once you’ve found the location, you’re ready to head out. Think of the GPS as your new-world treasure map. You simply use the device to lead you to your treasure. The website will tell you what size of cache you’re looking for, but you never know what you’ll find since the form of the geocache changes. It could be any sort of container, or even a hidden compartment in an item you would never expect. Once you find it, sign the log inside and leave it for the next person to find.
Record Your Findings
Almost as important as finding the treasure is how you arrived there. The geocaching site allows you to come back and share your story with others. After all, no pirate ever found his treasure easily. Make sure you take pictures and you can even write a short story about your adventure. The great part about geocaching is that the game never ends. Move on to the next adventure.
