It’s Winter so You Might as Well Ski
Posted on 01/23/2012
There’s really nothing like it. Sweating through layer after fleecy layer, you flex previously undiscovered muscles through glistening white moguls. After you conquer the run that once felt insurmountable, you turn triumphantly to survey the mountain you just flew down. What a feat. Well done, you.
Nothing—absolutely nothing—fun happens in January. Everyone’s excitement after the first snow has abated, your Christmas tree is dead at the end of the driveway, and it gets dark so early that your energy is zapped by 6:00. What’s a winter-hating, SAD-suffering person to do? Embrace the snow. Go skiing.
Head for the mountains this month to make the most out of the winter weather. It’s not too late to book a trip for the end of the month, and you can spend the coming weeks preparing for an invigorating winter getaway.
When to Book
Schedule your venture on the slopes for midweek. Locals and weekend travelers clog the slopes Friday through Sunday but disappear when the workweek rears its ugly head. If you can spare a few personal days, the discounted lift tickets will be well worth it. Unless you have your own, rent your equipment upon arrival at the resort. Just be sure to call ahead to ensure that your skis and poles will be reserved for you. Oh, and rent a helmet. Skiing’s fun AND dangerous.
How to Prep
Managing a difficult run is exhilarating—brag-worthy even. And it isn’t just the cold air whipping against your face or the speed with which you tackle the run. Skiing is an ego-booster because it uses muscles you never knew you had (but boy, will they make themselves known the morning of Day 2).
Strengthen your legs and hips at the gym this month so that you never have to quit early for hot chocolate or a gondola ride. Focus on lunges, squats and interval training to build endurance. You’ll be off the bunny slopes and onto double blacks in no time.
What to Pack
Dressing for the slopes isn’t the same as throwing on your coat for a walk. Basics like warm waterproof gloves, thick socks and a breathable base layer are common sense, but some ski trip necessities are less obvious. Add to your bag sunscreen and lip balm with a high SPF, neck gaiters and hand warmers. Packing in the order you will get dressed (base layer, then mid layer and so on) will help you remember all of your must-haves for your winter skication.
A ski trip may be just what you need to boost your mood and carry you through this blah month. Book your trip and start to prep. Fresh powder awaits.
