10 Blockbuster Hits to Go See This Summer

Summertime often brings with it a slew of new movies—everything from kids’ films to dramas to action-packed adventures. When it comes to exciting new releases, there is no better time than summer, and this year is no different. From Movie Insider and TIME, here are 10 of the most anticipated blockbuster films to hit the big screen this summer that you need to go see.

1. Finding Dory (June 17) In this sequel to Disney Pixar’s Finding Nemo, one forgetful blue fish Dory goes on a quest to find her family. The film brings back favorite characters from Finding Nemo along with some all-new friends for one big family-friendly adventure.

2. Independence Day: Resurgence (June 24) In this sequel to the 1996 sci-fi movie, we fast forward two decades after Earth underwent its first attack. Now, it faces an new extraterrestrial threat. The film brings back director Roland Emmerich to create a heart-stopping thrill ride.

3. The Legend of Tarzan (July 1) Based on the 1912 novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, this live action film tells the story of a once-wild Tarzan. Now living in civilized London, Tarzan must return home as king of the jungle and investigate suspicious activities of a mining encampment.

4. The BFG (July 1) From Roald Dahl’s 1982 children’s novel comes this new Steven Spielberg adaptation film. A young girl named Sophie meets a Big Friend Giant with an even bigger heart who struggles to fit in with his fellow giants because he refuses to eat children.

5. The Secret Life of Pets (July 8) The film tells what our pets really do when we leave the house. Max is the center of his owner’s world until she brings home Duke—an uncivilized mongrel. Now the two of them have to take down an army of pets led by a fluffy white bunny.

6. Ghostbusters (July 15) 30 years after the original Ghostbusters took the world by storm in 1984, the franchise returns with an all-female cast. Director Paul Feig brings a new take to the spooky comedy and invites excitement and discussion.

7. Star Trek Beyond (July 22) In this latest film of the Star Trek franchise reboot, director Justin Lin takes over with Beyond. The U.S.S. Enterprise continues to explore the universe, where they encounter a new enemy who puts them and the Federation to the test.

8. Jason Bourne (July 29) Matt Damon returns as the CIA superspy Jason Bourne in this addition to The Bourne series. Though specific plot details are unknown at this time, Bourne begins to remember who he really is, and tries to uncover the mysteries of his past.

9. Suicide Squad (August 5) D.C. Comics is releasing its biggest antihero movie yet. In Suicide Squad, a secret government agency hires imprisoned supervillains to take on a dangerous black ops task. Famous villains include The Joker, Harley Quinn and Deadshot.

10. Max Steel (August 26) Max Steel chronicles the story of teenager Max McGrath and his newfound alien companion Steel, who need to work together and combine their incredible new powers to evolve into the superhero Max Steel.
